The Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA) is a hiking itinerary that connects the entire Alpine arc and partly extends into the Piemonte region. The overall route covers approximately 1000km: a vast trek through the Piedmont Alps that can be traversed from south to north or vice versa. Additionally, numerous variants and circular routes branch off the main trail, allowing for deeper exploration of specific areas.
Each stage involves 5 to 8 hours of walking, mostly on mule tracks or easy paths, moving from one valley to another through the most accessible passes.
The trails are marked by metal signs with a flag featuring vertical red, white, and red stripes, with "GTA" written in the center. At the end of each day, hikers stay overnight in a refuge or at a "posto tappa" associated with GTA. Once again, the individual stages can become interesting daily or two-day excursions.
